Volvo Cars Ghent

Volvo Cars Ghent (till 2007 known as Volvo Cars Europe Industry N.V.) is an automobile manufacturer located in the port district of Ghent in western Belgium. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Swedish automaker, Volvo Personvagnar AB (Volvo Cars)
The plant opened in 1965. It was the first European Volvo plant outside Sweden. The Ghent location was chosen because it was centrally positioned within the EEC and was supported by a good transport infrastructure.

The first Volvo produced in Ghent was the company’s 120 Series (120/121/122, later 130). In September 2012 the plant was producing the Volvo C30, Volvo V40, Volvo S60 and Volvo XC60 models, of which the XC60 was the top seller, thanks in part to tax advantages available in certain key markets for the DRIVe version. In 2011 the company was hoping to match the 258,000 units of output achieved in 2005, the plant’s top production year till that point.
New models from Ghent include the new V40 and V40 Cross Country.
In 2011 the Ghent plant employed almost 5,000 people. Recent recruitment programmes saw 270 new employees in October 2010, 400 in March 2011 and a further 100 at the end of May 2011. The current CEO is Geert Bruyneel who took over in October 2010 when his predecessor, Derek Jessiman, left in order to take up the same job at Volvo’s Torslanda Plant.
In 2012, with approximately 260,000 cars produced during the first ten months of the year, Volvo's Ghent plant is again producing more cars than any other Belgian car plant, well ahead of Ford's scheduled for closure Mondeo plant in Limburg (approx 150,000 cars produced during the same ten-month period) and the Audi plant in Brussels (120,000 cars produced during the same period).
Next to the car plant, there is also Belgium’s second largest truck plant, operated by Volvo Europa Truck.
